🎯 Getting Closer to Reopening: 18 September 2026

The restoration is now well underway, and seeing the new Coloursteel roof being installed is an important milestone for the club.

There is still work to complete before we can reopen the clubhouse, but every stage brings us closer to welcoming our members and the wider Piha community back to The Bowler.

⚠️ Asbestos roof removal completed
The old asbestos roofing was safely removed by a licensed asbestos removalist, followed by the required clearance process.

17-28 August 2026
🔨 Structural repairs & preparation
The exposed roof structure was inspected, with rot repairs, purlin straightening, bracing, insulation and electrical pre-wiring completed.

Week 1: 3-7 August 2026
🏗️ Scaffolding & Site Establishment
Our roof restoration project officially commenced with the installation of scaffolding, fencing, shrink-wrap and the implementation of health and safety controls, marking the start of this important restoration of our clubhouse.

Week 2: 10–14 August 2026:
⚠️ Asbestos Roof Removal
Asbestos roof removal has now been completed, with the old roof safely removed and the timber roof frame fully exposed. This marks another major milestone in the restoration of our clubhouse, with structural repairs and preparations for the new roof now underway..

Weeks 3-4: 17-28 August 2026
🏠 Structual Repairs & Preparation
Following the successful completion of the asbestos removal and clearance, work moved into the structural repair and preparation phase. With the old roof removed, the exposed roof structure was fully inspected and repairs completed, including frame repairs, electrical and alarm pre-wiring, roof bracing and insulation installation.​​​​​​​

Week 5: 31 August-4 September 2026
🏠 New Coloursteel Roof is On
Our new Coloursteel roof has now been installed, marking another major milestone in the restoration. The final painting and fixtures are underway, while the club gets its final reset and tidy-up. The scaffolding and shrink wrap will soon be removed as we get ready to reopen on 18 September 2026.

Why The Bowler is Getting a New Roof

The Bowler is entering an exciting new chapter.

Following the severe storms of December 2025 and March 2026, Piha Bowling Club will undergo a major roof replacement project to restore and protect our much-loved clubhouse for many years to come.

For over 70 years, The Bowler has been a place where our community comes together. Whether it's for bowls, a meal, a celebration or simply catching up with friends, our clubhouse has been at the heart of Piha life. This restoration is an important investment to ensure it remains a welcoming community hub for future generations.

After many months of insurance assessments, planning and coordination, work is now ready to begin.

We'll keep this page updated throughout the project so members can follow our progress.

Some of the damaged caused from the severe weather events in December 2025 and March 2026.

Club Closure

To enable the works to be completed safely, The Bowler will be closed from Monday, 3 August 2026 for approximately six weeks.

The existing roof contains asbestos, meaning specialist removal procedures are required.

During this period:

  • the entire building will be surrounded by scaffolding;
  • the clubhouse will be fully wrapped to create a controlled work environment;
  • licensed asbestos removal specialists will safely remove the existing roof; and
  • a brand-new roof will then be installed.

These works will be carried out in accordance with all New Zealand health and safety, environmental and building regulations. The safety of our members, contractors, volunteers and wider community is our highest priority.

Our Site & Project Managers

The project is being delivered by CMG under the supervision of Site Manager Andy Thomas and led on behalf of Piha Bowling Club by Project Manager/Committee Member Malcolm Donald. As full playing members of The Bowler, both are personally invested in ensuring our clubhouse is restored safely and to a high standard for future generations.

Keeping Our Site Safe

Health and safety remains a priority throughout the restoration project.

Site controls are being actively managed throughout each stage of the works, with regular toolbox meetings, hazard monitoring and contractor inductions.

⚠️ Asbestos Removal Works: Completed

As part of the Piha Bowling Club roof restoration project, licensed asbestos removal specialist Specialist Asbestos & Mould Removal Services Ltd (SAMRS) completed the removal of the asbestos-containing roofing materials from the clubhouse between 10–14 August 2026.

The asbestos roof has now been safely removed and the timber roof frame exposed, allowing the next stage of the roof restoration works to commence.

  • WorkSafe New Zealand: Notification completed prior to works

Safety Measures

The removal works were undertaken with appropriate asbestos safety controls in place, including:

  • Safety signage, barriers and temporary fencing
  • Full shrink-wrapping of the clubhouse
  • Strict dust suppression measures
  • Safe handling and disposal of asbestos-containing materials
  • Independent inspection and asbestos clearance following removal

 The asbestos removal stage of the project is now complete, and the site has been cleared for the next phase of the roof restoration. Structural repairs, electrical work, insulation and preparation for installation of the new roof will now continue.

The clubhouse and surrounding work area remain closed while the roof restoration continues. We appreciate everyone in our community helping us keep the site safe by respecting all barriers and signage and staying clear of the work area. Thank you for your patience and support while we work to restore our clubhouse and get it ready to welcome everyone back.

Looking Ahead

Although we'll miss seeing everyone around the clubhouse during the closure, these improvements will ensure The Bowler continues to serve our community for decades to come.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September beneath a brand-new roof and continuing the proud tradition of bowling, friendship and community at the Piha Bowling Club.

Why is the club closing?

The existing roof contains asbestos. The building must be closed while licensed contractors safely remove the roof and install the new one.

Can members access the club during construction?

No. For health and safety reasons, there will be no public access to the site while works are underway.

Will the bowling green remain open?

No. The entire club will be closed during the construction period. The bowling green is also currently closed for its annual green maintenance and will be ready when we reopen after construction.

How long will the works take?

The project is expected to take approximately six weeks, although weather and construction conditions may affect the timeline.
